3 UK Charities, Muzika, the Anglo Romanian Education Trust (ARET) and the Foundation for the Relief of Disabled Orphans (FRODO) have joined with our Romanian partners to organise a 2 day conference in Bucharest to explore the issue faced by Romanian Care Institutions in the face of austerity measurers and up coming changes in Social Care legislation.

Supported by the British Embassy the Conference will see 100 senior practitioners and policy makers come together to look at how they can collaborate to meet the challenges they face and hopefully identify issues they can put to policy makers and Ministers as soon as the November elections are over in Romania.

Muzika has provided 3 UK speakers to talk about their experience of similar challenges in the UK but the event is very much about providing a platform for our Romanian partners to get together to identify common problems and, hopefully, common solutions.

Details of the event can be found at www.eventsbucharest.org and we will be reporting back on progress on a regular basis.

His Excellency Martin Harris, the Bucharest based British Ambassador to Romania, made a 2 day visit to Timisoara on the 20/21 March. He had heard of the good work carried out in the City by Muzika over the years and extended an invitation to join him for dinner to the Trustees.

Peter Goodwin and Adriana Lazaroaia, a local GP with a long association with Muzika, represented the Trustees at a very enjoyable and informal meal in a local restaurant.

The Ambassador spend 3 hours with Peter and Adriana discussing the work of Muzika, the proposed conference to be held in Bucharest in May and the general issues of health care in Romania.

He was very interested and supportive of our work and extended an offer of help, if needed, with the organisation of the conference in May.

On Saturday 17th March 2012 James Lisney, the first Bemrose Bursary winner given by Music at Duffield, returned to The Ecclesbourne School and entertained the large audience with a programme of Mendelssohn, Debussy, Chopin, and finally Schubert. James had a wonderfully easy going rapport with the audience and spoke about each piece before he played it, giving little anecdotes and interesting snippets about each piece. James has performed in Romania, the London South Bank Centre, the Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Leipzig, Brussels and Berlin and has a very varied musical life.

James was delighted to note one of his students amongst the audience, who was travelling to the south of England from Liverpool and stopped off in Duffield for the concert.

Interestingly, James has been a supporter of Muzika almost since its inception and has given charity concerts for Muzika in Duffield in the past.

It was a wonderful evening much enjoyed by the audience who succeeded in claiming an encore after listening to an energetic performance of Schubert’s piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D.959
